A proud history of Spanish, then Mexican and finally American rule gave rise to El Cajon, or “The Big Box.” A town of 100, 000 nestled in a valley surrounded by mountains, El Cajon is known for its arid climate, which fluctuates considerably due to the town’s location. Inaugurated as a city just over a century ago, El Cajon was first home to a series of ranchos, land grants officiated by the Spanish government. The grants were used to house Roman Catholic missions in hopes of converting the locals. The valley that would one day house the modern-day town was initially used as pasture, the mountains serving as a nature’s barrier should a lone beast stray.
Changing hands through generations and multiple families, the area would eventually house a hotel. Its owner bore the memorable name of Amaziah Lord Knox, and he would also serve as the first postmaster once families began populating the are and a town took root.
